Summary of
"The Spiritual Guide to Attracting Love: Chapter Three"

By: Adrianna Pitts

One of my favorite self-help books ever written is this one by Carolyn Boyes. I picked it up and flipped through it one afternoon in Barnes & Noble and bought it immediately. To me, it was different from the typical "manifest your dreams into reality" books. It spoke to my curious heart in many ways, became a Bible for me, and it would warm my heart to share a snippet with you.

Said snippet will be a summary of the this chapter in the book called "Fall in Love with Yourself." It begins with a quote from the Buddha:

"You, yourself as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection."

  • The first point is that you have to love yourself before you can love someone else or before someone else can love you. (pg 60)
  • The second is that you are perfect just the way you are. Boyes explains "We are all born perfect. You just need to look at yourself and accept the fact. We are all born to be loved. You don't need to do anything to attract other people to you, other than recognize the love within yourself." (pg. 61)
  • Next is loving the outer you. She makes this statement that has stuck with me since the moment I read it: "You wouldn't tell your children they are ugly. I have to admit I say things to myself that I would never dream of saying to a child. The truth is, when I look at young children, whatever they look like I really only notice how perfect they are."  When you think about it, you probably never would tell a child that they're too fat or that they're not pretty. Be kind to yourself. It's hard to be happy, when you're constantly bullying yourself before you even get out of the gate. (pg. 65)
  • Think about everything that makes you happy. Now think about what you still want to do. Take a class, have the longest Hulu marathon you can, or travel somewhere new. Mix up your life by doing new things you've always wanted. (pgs. 66-67)
  • "Flow Your Love to the Universe." We are all connected, so the love you send out will always come back to you. (pg. 71)

There you have it! I highly recommend this book to everyone, but especially to those with a more spiritual approach to life. It's one of my favorites, and I feel cleansed each time I pore over its pages. Much thanks to Carolyn Boyes! Happy reading!
